I’m Hungry For More

In a world filled with distractions and surface-level living, many Christians find themselves longing for something deeper. They attend conferences and seek prayer from others, wondering why some believers seem to have spiritual power while others struggle. The answer lies in an ancient practice that Jesus himself demonstrated: prayer and fasting.

When the disciples failed to cast out a demon from an epileptic boy in Matthew 17, Jesus explained that some spiritual breakthroughs require a deeper level of authority that only comes through prayer and fasting. Before this miracle, Jesus had been transfigured on the mountain, spending intimate time in His Father's presence, which gave Him spiritual insight and supernatural power that the disciples lacked.

Prayer and fasting produces three transformative results in believers' lives. First, it sharpens spiritual sight, helping you see past worldly distractions and understand what's really happening in the spiritual realm. Second, it positions you to witness God's supernatural power as you demonstrate that you need Him more than comfort or convenience. Third, and most importantly, it deepens your relationship with God, creating intimacy with your Heavenly Father. Fasting involves giving up something valuable to focus on the spiritual world, whether food, activities, or other enjoyments. The key is sacrificing something meaningful to demonstrate your hunger for more of God.

Matthew 17:14–21 (NKJV)

And when they had come to the multitude, a man came to Him, kneeling down to Him and saying, "Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is an epileptic and suffers severely; for he often falls into the fire and often into the water. So I brought him to Your disciples, but they could not cure him." Then Jesus answered and said, "O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I bear with you? Bring him here to Me." And Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of him; and the child was cured from that very hour. Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, "Why could we not cast it out?" So Jesus said to them, "Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you. However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting."

Now after six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, led them up on a high mountain by themselves; and He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light. And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Him. Then Peter answered and said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good for us to be here; if You wish, let us make here three tabernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them; and suddenly a voice came out of the cloud, saying, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him!"
